Methods of controlling Lindsay® ArtGraver® handpieces

There are multiple ways to control the impacts of ArtGraver® handpieces.

The "alternative methods" described in the following are NOT recommended because they do not work well in comparison to the PalmControl and Foot Controls methods.  But one or more of the other methods may be helpful to for a disabled person that is  not able to use his or her hand or foot as normal.  The alternative methods use a lot oof air and will make an compressor work extra hard.   The Lindsay FootControl and PalmControl setups are recommended over the alternative methods described in the following.

The Lindsay FootControl and PalmControl are superior to the "alternative methods" described in the following.

Foot Pedal & Regulator Setup - IS a recommended method.

The Lindsay foot control method works similar to a gas pedal in your car.  You hold the graver in the cut and depending how much gas you give it the deeper/faster the impacts become.   Available at page link

#HandControl - Consisting of four methods

#HandControl® 1 - IS a recommended method.

PalmControl®  Similar to hand pushing but you do not have to push any harder than you normally do to hold the point in the cut.  The Lindsay PalmControl is the most intuitive to natural manual palm push engraving in the industry.
Available at page link

#HandControl 2 alternative method FingerPlace  without hose barb. This method is somewhat similar to the "RemoteControl" method described below only after removing the plug screw from the side of the body do not replace it with a hose barb. In other words, leave the hole open after removing the plug screw. Now similar to the "RemoteControl" method first increase the idle air by turning the small idle valve up next to the foot control's regulator counter-clockwise.  Keep unscrewing it to let more and more air leak from the open hole. You can increase it until you hear and feel the handpiece idle or you can increase it less depending what you prefer.

Now to make the handpiece impact hold the handpiece so that you can place a finger over the hole.  Depending how much you cover the hole will control the impact.

For more power you can instead of or in addition to increasing the idle air you can floor the foot pedal and leave it down.  Add a weight to it to keep it down if you wish.   This will allow even more air to the handpiece and provide more impact power.

#HandControl 3 alternative method

FingerPlace™ with hose barb. This is the same as just described only you will be placing a hose barb in the hole after removing the plug and placing your finger over the end of the hose barb to control the impacts.  This is a preferred method over the method described above that is without using a barb.

#HandControl 4 alternative method

PalmPlace  For this order the modified rubber handle.  This handle has a hole on the back of it.  To operated place the modified rubber handle on your foot controlled ArtGraver, however you will not be using the foot pedal.  Now similar to the "RemoteControl" and "FingerPlace" methods increase the idle air by turning the small idle valve up next to the foot control's regulator counter-clockwise. Keep unscrewing it to let more and more air leak from hole on the back of the handle.

Now to make the handpiece impact hold the handpiece so that hole is covered and pressed against your palm.  Depending how much you cover the hole will control the impact.  This control is not reliable, as any little movement of where your palm is in relation to the hole will change the impacts.

For more power you can instead of or in addition to increasing the idle,  you can floor the pedal and leave it down.  Add a weight to it to keep it down if you wish.   This will allow even more air to the handpiece and provide more power.

RemoteControl alternative method
This method is useful for someone that may be disabled.  For example arthritis of hands.

For this use the foot pedal setup, however you do not use the pedal.  Instead remove one of the two plug screws on the side of the body of the ArtGraver handpiece and install a second brass hose barb in its place. Now place a length of handpiece tubing to this barb, but on the other end do not connect it to anything.

Increase the idle by turning the small idle valve up next to the foot control's regulator counter-clockwise. Keep unscrewing it to let more and more air leak from the the end of the tubing you have installed.

Now in order to remotely control the impacts you will pinch the tubing that is leaking to restrict or block it from leaking. You may pinch it with whatever method you prefer. One is to place the tubing in your mouth and use your teeth. Of course do not have the end in your mouth so you do not have air going into your mouth, but maybe a few inches before the end.  See illustration.

The length of the tubing will effect how much air it takes to idle. The overall amount of power is limited with this method.  A longer piece tubing takes less, and so you have far less power.

The FootControl and PalmControl setups are superior to the alternative methods described above. While the alternative methods are options they are not recommend. It is always best to utilize and use the ArtGraver handpieces with as described in there manuals with the ArtGraver foot control setup and with the PalmControl setup.

If you would like to run the foot control setup and a PalmControl, this can be done using the current foot control setup as described in the manual and pictured below.
